Fourth-quarter woes doom Lady Pirates
Through three quarters against Burleson Centennial at home, the Granbury Lady Pirates looked like they had a shot at picking up their second District 5-5A win.
But Centennial won 68-46 after outscoring Granbury 23-4 in the fourth quarter, an eight-minute barrage of full-court defense that left the Lady Pirates at 18-9 overall and 1-3 in district.
Granbury led by one after the first quarter and by three at the half, and was within three points of Centennial after the third quarter. The Lady Spartans turned up their full-court press defense as the second half wore on, and Granbury could not hang on to the ball against the pressure.
Centennial also got hot from behind the three-point line, knocking down six three-pointers in the second half after making three in the first. And after scoring 16 points in the second quarter, the Lady Pirates scored 16 in the entire second half.
Gentry Garner and Brooklynne Sandel led Granbury with 10 points each. Gracie Nichols finished with eight points, including two first-half threes, while Nina Parker scored five and Jayla Hall and Ashlyn Bednarz added four each.
The Lady Pirates played Crowley on the road Friday and will host Mansfield Legacy Tuesday at 8 p.m.
