Granbury baseball tournament schedule rolls on
The Granbury Pirate baseball team went 1-2-1 at the Southwest High School Tournament over the weekend.
Granbury began the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Socorro Friday. In a classic pitchers’ duel, Walt Hartman and Ryan Felton combined to allow only two hits and one earned run while striking out eight for the Pirates. But Socorro allowed just one hit, to Taylor Calcote, and Granbury struck out 12 times.
The Pirates found their offense in the second Friday game, beating Southwest 7-0 in six innings. Brock Mueller went 3-3 and drove in two runs, while Matthew Walters was 2-3 with a walk and scored three times.
Parker Bradley got the start, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out three over three innings. He was replaced by Tyler Sudderth, who induced nine straight outs - including six strikeouts - on 33 pitches to end the game.
Granbury tied Oakridge 5-5 in the first game Saturday. The Pirates held a 5-2 lead entering the top of the sixth before giving up three runs in the frame.
Kaleb Shankles was 2-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Milo Behrens was 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
Cordel Gibson got the start on the mound, going 3.1 innings and striking out seven while allowing three hits and one run. Trevor St. Don entered and finished the game, recording four strikeouts and four walks and allowing five hits and four runs (only one of which was earned).
Granbury finished its weekend with a 7-2 loss to Arlington Heights, the same team that knocked the Pirates out of the playoffs last season. Granbury didn’t score until the final inning, when Jacob Johnson launched a two-run home run.
Gibson had a triple in the game and Mueller doubled. Calcote got the start and allowed four runs, five hits and five walks while striking out six over 3.1 innings. Walters and Garret Jones finished out the game.
The Pirates hold an overall record of 4-6-1. They are playing in the Northwest ISD Tournament this weekend.
