Granbury softball wins four in Forney

The Granbury Lady Pirates took on tough competition at the Forney Varsity Tournament over the weekend and emerged unscathed, winning four games and tying one.

Granbury got things going with an 8-2 win over Waxahachie in three innings Thursday. Brianna Venable smacked two home runs in the first two innings and finished with five RBI. In the circle, Alison Cooper struck out six and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

Venable’s bat stayed hot in the next game against Little Elm, which Granbury won 16-2 in four innings. The senior drove in six runs and hit another homer.

Cooper also had a home run, as part of a 4-4 game at the plate, and Cali Crawford hit her first home run as a Lady Pirate as well. Makayla Woody was 2-3 and scored two runs.

The third game was another win for the Lady Pirates, an 8-1 victory in five innings over Lebanon Trail in which Cooper hit a home run on the second pitch of the game. She went 3-3 and drove in three runs, while Rayli Ruby drove in two and went 2-4.

Venable pitched all five innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out two and walking two.

Granbury and North Forney played each other to a six-inning scoreless draw in the first game on Saturday. Cooper, Venable and Lillian Williams collected the only hits for Granbury, and Ruby drew a walk.

Cooper struck out eight and walked two, allowing three hits over her six innings of work.

The final game of the weekend was a 6-4 win over Allen in 4.5 innings. Granbury trailed 2-1 after the first inning, but a five-run second inning powered by RBI singles from Ruby and Shelton and a bases-clearing triple from Venable gave the Lady Pirates the lead they needed.

Cooper allowed four hits and no earned runs, striking out one and walking none.

For the tournament, Cooper was 11-13 at the plate with two home runs, six RBI and four walks. Venable was 8-13 with 15 RBI and three home runs.

The Lady Pirates hosted Brock, the No. 4 team in Class 3A, on Tuesday. Granbury will play in the Mansfield Varsity Invitational beginning Thursday.
