H. D. Howard Classic

The Lipan Indians and Lady Indians will host the H.D. Howard Classic this weekend from Thursday-Saturday.

Twenty-nine teams will join the Lipan boys and girls for the annual tournament.

In addition to the Indians, Keene, Wall, Timpson, Quit-man, Millsap, Slidell, Clyde, Jim Ned, Wolfe City, Saltillo, Joaquin, Tenaha, Windthorst, Douglass and Glen Rose will compete on the boys’ side of the bracket. Many of those teams feature in the Top 25 of their respective classes in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, including Class 1A No. 1 Slidell, Class 2A No. 5 Tenaha and Class 3A No. 21 Wall.

The girls’ bracket has Douglass, Castleberry, Eastland, Tenaha, Timpson, North Central Texas Academy, Santo, Central Heights, Cisco, Mineral Wells, Childress, Joaquin, Keene and Veribest joining the Lady Indians. Featured teams, along with Class 1A No. 4 Lipan, include Class 2A No. 16 Santo and Class 3A No. 15 Cisco.

Games will take place at the New Gym and the Jimmy Tate Court in Lipan ISD.

The Indians will start their tournament against Class 4A Keene on Thursday at 9:20 a.m. The winner will play at 6:40 p.m. Thursday against either Wall or Timpson.

The Lady Indians will play in a three-team pool to determine advancement in the bracket. They start against Keene at 10:40 a.m. and will play again against Veribest at 8 p.m. Thursday.

North Central Texas Academy, another Hood County team, will start its tournament against Timpson Thursday,

Championships take place Saturday night at the New Gym. The girls’ bracket title game is at 6:40 p.m., with the boys’ game following.
