Lady Indians win H.D. Howard Classic

The Lipan Lady Indians claimed the H.D. Howard Tournament title Saturday night.

As always for the Lady Indians, it was not an easy road.

Lipan faced a Class 4A team (Keene), the No. 22 Class 1A team (Veribest), a solid Class 3A team (Childress) and a Class 2A team (Timpson), besting all those schools en route to the championship.

The title game was a 40-31 win over Timpson that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Lady Indians led by double digits for most of the fourth quarter before Timpson made it interesting at the end with pressure defense.

Junior forward Maggie Peacock had 17 points in the championship game and was named the Tournament MVP. Taylor Clark added 12 points, Dally Coulter had five and Marti Seymour and Lynsey Little each buried three-pointers.

Little, a freshman guard, and junior forward Clark joined Peacock on the All-Tournament team.

The semifinal against Childress was a thriller from start to finish. The Lady Indians trailed 28-21 at the half but rallied to win 48-45 behind 15 points from Little and 14 from Peacock.

Lipan withstood an 8-16 performance from three-point range by Childress. Peacock added nine rebounds, and Coulter went 4-6 from the foul line while collecting six rebounds of her own.

The Lady Indians (12-1), ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, were off Tuesday and will play Nazareth, the No. 1 team in Class 1A, in Hermleigh Friday at 6:15 p.m.
