Granbury High School’s Philip Becker, a member of the GHS Marine Corps JROTC rifle team, signed to compete in college for The Ohio State University in a ceremony Wednesday.

Becker has won an All-Services National Team Championship with GHS and also took home the individual National Air Rifle Championship this summer. That latter achievement earned him the coveted USA junior shooting team jacket, which he highlighted as his favorite moment of his career.

Ever since he joined the GHS team, Becker has had his sights set on shooting in college. He was also considering North Carolina State and West Virginia.

“I think it’s kind of the goal for everyone who gets into this sport,” he said. “I always kind of thought that I could reach that potential.

“I guess when it set in that I could get to go is probably junior year, when the coaches were allowed to communicate with me. That’s when I realized, ‘Hey, I’m doing okay.’”

Becker plans to major in aerospace engineering, and wants to become a NASA flight controller. He attended a camp this summer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston to help further that goal.
