Pirates hold on against Crowley
A three-run first inning was all the Granbury Pirates needed to beat Crowley 3-0 at Tidwell Field Tuesday.
Granbury got off to a hot start after freshman centerfielder Matthew Walters doubled to lead off the home half of the first. After David Hinojosa was hit by a pitch, Brock Mueller hit an RBI groundout that scored Walters. Ethan Current singled home Hinojosa, and Trevor Jones singled to move Current to third.
Jones was picked off first base, but Current scored on the throw to first.
Those three runs were the only scoring at the ballpark Tuesday. Easton Turnage kept Crowley’s bats quiet, allowing only one hit through 5.2 innings. He struck out eight and walked seven.
Hinojosa came in relief and struck out the final four batters of the game on 16 pitches.
Clayton Jones and Jacob Bates also had base hits for Granbury. Bates made several sharp plays at third base, including a nice grab on a throw from Current to catch a Crowley runner stealing. Current threw out two baserunners.
The win moved Granbury to 4-1 in District 5-5A. The Pirates played at Crowley Friday, and will stay on the road to take on Mansfield Legacy at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
