Rattlers cruise on Senior Night

Wednesday, February 12, 2020

It didn’t take long for the Tolar Rattlers to start celebrating Senior Night Friday against Boyd.

Tolar, which honored Matt Moody, Seth Carroll, Brett Jackson and Blake Cason before tip-off, scored the first 25 points of the game and coasted from there to beat Boyd 63-40.

The Rattler’ opening run lasted the entire first quarter and into the second. Tolar used a barrage of threepointers and some intense offensive rebounding in the first quarter to build its lead to 23-0 after one quarter.

The Rattlers started their four seniors along with junior Tanner Courtney, and the seniors played the entire first quarter before coach Ethan Lunn started to give them breathers in the second. Tolar led 35-13 at the half, and though Boyd tried to make it interesting by putting together small runs in the third and fourth quarter, the Rattlers slammed the door by winning the fourth quarter 19-13.

Capping off a career in which he scored over 1,000 points, Moody led Tolar with 22 points against Boyd and tossed in four steals. Cason scored 12 and had four rebounds, Jackson added five points and 11 rebounds and Carroll scored eight points and had seven boards along with three blocks.

Grady McQuain added five points. Justin Berry, Austin McGowan and Courtney all had three, and Chase Stein scored two.

Tolar improved to 6-5 in District 7-3A with the win. The Rattlers are in fourth place in district and had a chance to solidify that spot Tuesday against Millsap.

As of Tuesday, there was a chance Tolar could still overtake Brock for the No. 3 seed in the district. That would have required Tolar to win out and Brock to lose out, including a Rattler win over Brock in the final game of the season.

If Tolar does remain in the No. 4 spot, the Rattlers will have to play the No. 1 team from District 8-3A. Childress, the No. 20 team in the state in Class 3A, currently leads that district.

The Rattlers will play at Paradise Friday at 6:30 p.m. A win in that game would assure the Rattlers of a playoff bid.
