Relentless pressure swamps Pirates

Pirates face ‘big’ football game Friday against Brewer Bears

Abilene Cooper 69, Granbury 7.

Why say more, except that the Pirates prevented a shutout in the final quarter Oct. 23 night at Johnny Perkins Field when Zach Watson dashed for a 5-yard touchdown and Drew Henderson kicked the extra point.

“We made an already good team even better,” Pirate Head Coach Chad Zschiesche said about that Pirates’ multiple mistakes.

The good news, he said, is that the Pirates can learn from the errors and play for another day.

That day is Friday when the Pirates clash with the Brewer Bears.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Pirate Stadium.

Brewer and Cooper are tied for the district lead at 2-0. Granbury is 1-1.

“It’s a big game for them, and they know it, and it’s a big game for us,” Zschiesche said.

A Pirate win, the coach said, would make a much easier path to the playoffs.

The Pirates have four remaining games after Brewer — at Azle, home against Justin Northwest, at Fort Worth’s Farrington Field against Arlington Heights and home against Saginaw.

Azle appears much stronger of the four.

Brewer plays a host of juniors, and some sophomores and freshmen like the Pirates.

Also like the Pirates, the Bears have put lots of points on the scoreboard this season.

“They are extremely talented at the skill positions,” Zschiesche said. “They have a very athletic quarterback and running back combo” behind beefy offensive linemen.

The Bears run lots of offensive motion “to try to test eye discipline,” the coach said.

They stack the line with a “feast or famine” defense. The Pirates will have to sustain blocks to move the ball and prevent big defensive plays.

The Pirates are nursing some nagging injuries but nothing major.

“We’ve played five in a row. It’s that time of year where no one is 100 percent healthy,” Zschiesche said.
