Strength, Power, Skill

Summer has officially started, but the Tolar Rattlers are already almost through with their official strength and conditioning camp.

The camp, dubbed “S-P-S,” which stands for strength, power and skill, began in the first week of June and officially concludes Friday. The weight room will remain open for high school athletes throughout July until practice for football starts back up in the fall.

Tolar head football coach and athletic director Jeremy Mullins said the camp tends to draw around 40 kids every morning. The morning typically start with a weight-lifting cycle before players take the football field for skill work.

“This year the UIL made it legal for you to work skill-specific stuff for the first time,” Mullins said. “We’ve taken advantage of that – not that we’ve done a strenuous amount of straight football stuff, but we’ve definitely taken the time to work on some things.”

Once July hits, Mullins said he expects the senior leaders on the football team to take over leading their teammates in voluntary weight room sessions.
