Texas tradition like no other

Posted

They didn’t have Homecoming mums that trailed the ground.

In fact, they didn’t have mums period.

Granbury nurse Celeste Bowling, 30, grew up in rural Ohio where they celebrated school Homecomings, but not like the ones in Texas.

“When I moved to Texas and learned of the Homecoming traditions here, I felt like I was in a different culture,” said Bowling, a 2008 graduate of Southern Local High School in Salineville. “I had never heard of mums ... to be honest I am still not sure if I completely understand it.”

The Ohio Homecoming courts consisted of only girls, not boys. The girls dressed in pant suits and sat on the back of a sports car with their father while a driver circled the field.

The fathers would then escort the girls onto the field.

“Once everyone was on the field and lined up the girls would be able to pick from five boxes,” Bowling said. “All boxes looked the same on the outside, but on the inside one of them contained something different from the other four.

“The girl that was lucky enough to pick the box with the different item was then crowned Homecoming queen.”

Bowling said she’s very open to learning the Texas

ways and embracing the different cultures.
