Tolar survives, beats Lipan in Hood County battle
The Tolar Rattlers jumped out to a huge lead over Li-pan in Glen Rose Tuesday and hung on for dear life to win 70-60 in a Hood County showdown.
Tolar led 22-2 after one quarter. The Rattlers couldn’t miss from behind the three-point line, hitting on their first four attempts. Matt Moody and Blake Cason were shooting Lipan out of the gym.
“It was fun to be a part of,” Tolar head coach Ethan Lunn said. “We just came out hot.”
But the Indians were too good of a team not to come back, and come back they did. Lipan trimmed Tolar’s lead to 35-26 at the half and 52-42 at the end of three quarters, and suddenly the Rattlers found themselves fighting to keep their lead.
“We got into foul trouble, and had to make some adjustments that we didn’t want to make at the time,” Lunn said. “And credit to (Li-pan) – they were coming at us and making it tough, making us play defense.
“We were really proud of what we did in the first quarter, and forgot to play the rest of the game.”
Bannon Stump provided a huge lift for the Rattlers, scoring 16 points. Fourteen of those came in the second half as he powered his way through the Lipan defense.
“Stump is just a high-energy guy,” Lunn said. “He’s definitely not a finesse guy, more of a bull in a china closet, but one that we needed tonight. He was everywhere.”
Moody finished with a team-high 20 points for Tolar. Cason had 13 and Justin Berry added 12.
For Lipan, Tate Branson scored a game-high 22 points. He went 9-11 from the free-throw line. Weston Vance added another 11 points.
Tolar is playing in the Wichita Falls Fantasy of Lights Tournament this weekend. The Rattlers will play at Glen Rose Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Lipan is hosting Nocona Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. and will co-host the H.D. Howard Classic with the Lady Indians Thursday-Saturday.
