UIL announces new classification cutoffs

Posted

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) released its enrollment cutoffs for classification for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 competition seasons this week.

Class 6A consists of 249 schools with 2,220 students and above. Class 5A will have 254 schools between 1,210-2219 students; Class 4A has 202 schools with 515-1,209 students; Class 3A has 236 schools with 230-514 students; Class 2A has 200 schools with 105-229 students; and Class 1A will have 220 schools with fewer than 220 students.

For Hood County schools, this means Granbury will remain in Class 5A for all sports and Class 5A Division I (1,900-2,219) students in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Granbury turned in 2,073 students to the UIL earlier this year.

Tolar ISD is projected to move down to Class 2A. Tolar reported 222 students to the UIL, 18 short of the cutoff for Class 3A.

The Rattler football team would compete in Class 2A DI, made up of schools with 165.5-229 students.

Lipan ISD is expected to move up and join Tolar in Class 2A. Lipan reportedly turned in around 127 students, 23 more than the Class 1A maximum.

CHANGING DISTRICTS

Realignment won’t take place until February, so it’s hard to guess where Hood County teams will wind up.

If Granbury remains in a Fort Worth-centric district in football, the Pirates will most likely add Burleson Centennial and Cleburne to their slate. Both of those teams are moving up from Class 5A Division II. Saginaw Chisholm Trail and Saginaw Boswell are expected to make the jump to Class 6A, according to numbers obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Tolar and Lipan would most likely be in a district together for all non-football sports, as Lipan does not play football. Other teams in the area that could be included in their district include Hico and Santo.
