Area athletes among smartest in state

Smart athletes and success often go hand-in-hand. After all, it’s not many coaches who would play an athlete who only knows 60% of the playbook.

Several area senior athletes who helped their teams to successful spring seasons were recently named academic all-state by the Texas High School Coaches Association.

To be nominated for THSCA Academic All-State, a student must be:

· An athlete, student trainer or manager in good standing with the team

· Of good moral character

· A senior

· Have an overall grade point average of 92 or above (including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade 12). Weighted GPAs accepted

The highest honor an athlete can receive is being placed on the Elite Team. Granbury softball player Abigail Stone was the lone area athlete to achieve this status.

SEALS

The Granbury SEALS swim team will open the season today, June 8, in Weatherford. The team will compete against Weatherford, Stephenville, Mineral Wells and Bedford.

It is the first of three regular-season meets the SEALS will compete in as part of Region 4 in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation.

On Saturday, June 15, the SEALS will host their own meet at the Granbury YMCA. It will include Mineral Wells, The Colony, the RPA Rockets from the Ridglea Pool Association and Walsh.

They will end the regular season in Grapevine June 22 against the hosts, along with Denton and long-time rival Trophy Club.

The TAAF Region 4 Meet is July 13-14 in Southlake. From there, qualifiers will advance to the TAAF Games of Texas in Brownsville July 25-28.

RODEO

The Texas High School Rodeo Association began its State Finals Rodeo June 6 and it runs through June 15. The top four finishers in each event will qualify to compete in the National High School Finals Rodeo July 14-20 in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Several local athletes are competing for the chance to win a state title and move on to nationals. They include Lipan’s Kynzi Callaway, who finished the regular season ranked fourth in Region 3 in both senior pole bending and senior goat tying. She is also fourth in the Girls All-Around standings.
