Granbury Native Graduates from U.S. Naval Academy

Clarissa Layland of Granbury, Texas, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering and a commission as a U.S. Navy Ensign. Layland, an alumna of Granbury High School, completed four years of rigorous academic, physical, and professional military training.

During her time at the academy, Layland didn't just excel academically. She was an active member of the Rifle Team, honing her marksmanship skills, and The American Society of Engineers, where she contributed to the advancement of engineering knowledge.

Founded in 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy is a prestigious four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen to be professional officers in the naval service. The academy's student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen, includes more than 4,400 men and women from across the United States and several foreign countries.

The Naval Academy is recognized as a top institution, with U.S. News & World Report ranking it among the top five undergraduate engineering schools and the top 20 best liberal arts colleges. Midshipmen are taught by both military and civilian instructors and participate in intercollegiate varsity sports and various extracurricular activities. Their studies include leadership, ethics, small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and weapons, and military law.

Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a Bachelor of Science degree in one of 27 majors and commit to at least five years of service as commissioned officers in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps.
