October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On Tuesday, October, 22, Mission Granbury hosted Light the Night candlelight ceremony at the Courthouse Gazebo to honor all survivors of domestic violence and remember the Texans who lost their lives to domestic violence in 2023. Candles were lit, each accompanied by personal stories written on ribbons, honoring the 205 Texas women, men, and children who were killed by someone who claimed to love them. These ribbons were created by survivors.
From September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024, Mission Granbury provided services to 322 clients, both residential and non-residential. Among them were 142 women, 70 children, and 9 men. The dedicated staff at Mission Granbury answered 950 hotline calls and sheltered 142 women and 70 children in the Ada Carey Shelter for Women and Children.
Domestic violence occurs in our nation every minute, approximately every 15 seconds. Many people do not fully understand the reality of domestic violence and the number of lives it touches. Sadly, most cases remain hidden behind closed doors. This is why Domestic Violence Awareness Month is essential: to educate the public, raise awareness, and provide the support and strength that victims of domestic violence need.
