Six from area advance to state track; Tolar, Lipan softball advance with no-hitters

Kassidy Kirkpatrick and Miller Schenewark are flying high these days.

Well, they’re actually jumping high. But either way, they have earned their way to Austin to compete in the Class 5A State Track Meet May 11-13 at the University of Texas.

Both will be competing in the high jump after Kirkpatrick, a senior, won the Region I Meet this past weekend in Lubbock and Schenewark, a freshman, qualified as a wild card. She cleared 5 feet, 5 inches, sharing the tallest height cleared, but won in a tiebreaker with fewer misses.

“Kassidy has been very determined to finish this season doing her very best. She has been working hard with coach (Desiree) Shahan and has been jumping very consistent in meets and peaking at the right time,” Lady Pirates head coach Amber Ward said.

Kirkpatrick is the first Lady Pirate to qualify for state since Madison Northcutt did so in the pole vault three consecutive years (2010-12).

Meanwhile, Schenewark tied for second and an automatic qualifying berth, but lost a tiebreaker. So that meant waiting to see how he fared against other third-place jumpers across the state’s four regions. Again, he was tied for the best third-place performance, but this time he won the tiebreaker to join Kirkpatrick for a trip to Austin.

He will joined by three friends and teammates who ran with him on the 400 relay. The quartet of Garrison Nation, Caden Pate, Wyatt Jones and Soileau posted a time of 43.40 to place third.

However, they had the best time of all third-place finishers in the event across all four regions, meaning they will advance as a wild card.
