Almost three dozen new firefighters graduate Fire Academy

Posted

A slate of new firefighters recently graduated from the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department Fire Academy prepared to take the Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certification tests.

The 34 graduates will serve eight of the county’s nine volunteer fire departments.

Following graduation, each demonstrated their ability to fight structure fires, propane tank fires and car fires as friends and family watched.

More than 50 rookies attended at least some of the training sessions put on by GVFD officers. The officers met the challenge of the large class size by revamping training plans.

Under the leadership of Training Lieutenant Diego Guerrero, multiple topics were planned for each Saturday session, ensuring an optimal number of rookies per instructor at all times, according to a press release.

Many of Hood County’s other volunteer fire departments supported the Fire Academy by providing instructors.

Several area churches and the Hood County Republican Party provided lunches during the Fire Academy sessions.

The next Fire Academy will begin in the spring. Those interested should contact the GVFD online at GVFD.org or by calling GVFD’s Station No. 1 at 817-579-1111.
