American Legion Post #491, Department of Texas hosted American Legion National Commander Paul Dillard on Sunday, Oct. 17, during a stopover in his year-long worldwide tour to call on legion members.

Dillard, who was elected as the American Legion National Commander in Phoenix, Arizona on Aug. 26, met with Post members and had the opportunity to learn about veteran support efforts in Hood County.

During his inaugural address he vowed the American Legion will continue to build a foundation for the future, as we ensure “No Veteran Left Behind” as his theme for the 2021-2022 year. A major component of this endeavor are “Buddy Checks” by Legionnaires to and for each other.

Dillard also met with WWII Legionnaire Harry Whisler who served in Normandy with General George Patton’s “Tiger Division” and received the French Legion of Honor in 2016.

The American Legion is the largest of the organizations of veterans and represents those who have served and those serving. Their programs and those of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion are extensive and all are invited to see what they are about.
