Looking forward to fall ‘School days, school days, dear old golden rule days’

Posted

 HOOD COUNTY LIBRARY

Hood County Library Director Jennifer Logsdon is a former public school educator of 23 years, earning a master’s degree in Library Science during that time. She enjoys spending time with her blended family of five children, baking and of course reading.

I remember my Memaw singing that song while I helped her work in her classroom as a child. It was a treat to go up to the school before it was open for students. I got to go into the forbidden teacher’s lounge, get a Dr Pepper from the machine, and of course Memaw always had a Kudo bar for me to snack on. Her enthusiasm for getting ready for her students, the smile it gave her, the purpose she had: it was contagious!

She was a natural, especially after raising five children of her own. It was the time I spent with her on those summer days when I realized I wanted to be her. So, as the story goes, I became a teacher. Being a teacher eventually led me to become a librarian. I was a librarian in the public school setting for seven years, but that does not compare to taking the reins of a public library.

I have learned so much since being here at the Hood County Library. I know that I have purpose, it gives me a smile, and I am enthusiastic about all I get to help plan and implement.

YELLOW LIGHT

While August is a month of hustle and bustle for teachers, students and schools, August is our yellow light month. We slow down a bit and catch our breath from all our summer activities. But we are also busy planning how to serve the community during the fall.

In September, after Labor Day, our regular activities resume. Those are listed at the bottom of this article. But I would like to take the time to mention a couple of special events we are hosting.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Dr. Bill Miller of Granbury will be bringing a two-part Family Budgeting Workshop in September. He will give simple tips and tricks on how a family can create and stick to a one-page budget that will help them gain financial stability. He will come back in October to help families Smash Down Debt!

Registration for these workshops will be limited to 30. For more information, you can call the library, or email hoodcountylibrary@gmail.com. Online registration will be posted on our Facebook page and our website on Monday, Aug. 30.

The library will also host Maria Blue, a former NASA volunteer, as she presents a series titled Explore Space. This series is a five-part series for ages 6-11 that will focus on Pluto, the Moon, asteroids, and Saturn. Kids will learn about space through hands-on activities combining science and art while learning about current and future NASA missions.

THOSE MEMORIES

Walking into the library each morning before the patrons reminds me of the days I spent with Memaw in her classroom. The anticipation, the making of plans, the pursuit to serve compares to that of a teacher.

Hood County Library will have several opportunities for people to come and get involved. We may have a few less patrons walking through the door as school resumes, but as soon as September arrives, and our activities pick back up, we will be ready and waiting.

I want to leave you with this image. One day recently here at the library, there was a young boy still baby-plump, hair messy, wearing red shorts, a yellow shirt and cowboy boots. His arms were loaded down with books. I opened the door for him so he could make his way to the counter to check-out his haul for the day. He looked up at me and said, “I got my books. Thank you SO, SO much!!” He is the reason we do what we do!
