'Doing good for goodness sake' | Free Thanksgiving meals offered in Hood County

Posted

Local businesses and organizations are once again providing a free Thanksgiving meal to Hood County residents in need.

THURSDAY, NOV. 17: RANCHO BRAZOS COMMUNITY CENTER

On Thursday, Nov. 17 from 5-7 p.m., Rancho Brazos Community Center will have meals to go in a drive-through format at 3701 Sundown Trail.

The giveaway is open to everyone, with each family receiving a limit of one turkey.

On Friday, Nov. 18, from 5-7 p.m., Rancho Brazos will be hosting its 8th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. This event is also open to everyone.

For more information, call Rancho Brazos Community Center at 817-910-8114.

SATURDAY, NOV. 19: MATTRESSVILLE

As part of its newfound holiday tradition called The Great Turkey Giveaway, Mattressville will be giving away 100 12-to-15-pound free turkeys beginning at 10 a.m. on Nov. 19, in the parking lot at 4061 E. U.S. Highway 377.

David Davis, the owner of Mattressville, opened the Granbury location in May 2021. The Great Turkey Giveaway has been a tradition at his other two locations (Stephenville and Brownwood) for about five years.

"Now that we’re in Granbury, we do it here,” Davis said. “It’s one of our traditions that we have in our company. Granbury has been very good to us so this is a small way that we can give back. We like to say, ‘This is us doing good for goodness sake’ and this is just one of the ways that we love to give back is handing out free turkeys."

The turkeys will be handed out in a drive-through format until all 100 turkeys are gone. Limited to one turkey per vehicle while supplies last.

THURSDAY, NOV. 24: BROCK’S FOOD AND DRINKS

James Brock, owner of Brock’s Food and Drinks, has been giving away free Thanksgiving meals for the last six years — and this year is no exception.

Brock’s will be giving away 1,000 full Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings and sides from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24, at 4021 Acton Highway.

"We have so many volunteers,” Brock said. “The night before, we prepare the meals and Walt Wilkins and Tommy Alverson will be coming out to help serve on Thanksgiving Day and they will be performing as well. It's just a whole community effort.”

If interested in free meal delivery call Jan Brock at 682-558-9895.
