Hood County Democratic Party Chair Adrienne Martin has been awarded the Strong Backbone Award from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The award was for a speech she made at the Aug. 22 Granbury School Board meeting that went viral and was picked up by several news organizations.

The FFRF promotes separation of church and state.

Martin has spoken out against book banning and discrimination and has advocated for equality.

The Strong Backbone Award was presented to her during the FFRF’s national conference, held in San Antonio Oct. 28-30. Martin was one of the event’s speakers.

In addition to a plaque, she was given a $500 honorarium.

During Martin’s remarks at the August school board meeting, she told the elected officials that schools “are to not to be used for personal political agendas” and that “our children are here for education, not religious indoctrination.”

She told the Hood County News that the line that seemed to have made the video clip go viral was when she called out those who claim to be good Christians and then said, “Great. Go call your pastor. Our schools are not your church.”
