Rain in May ‘way above’ normal

Posted

The month of May is behind us, but the recent pattern of rainfall is supposed to stay around a little while longer.

Some may have wondered how the total rainfall for May ranked historically, but the records for Hood County are incomplete. Patricia Sanchez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth, told the HCN on Tuesday morning that two gauges in the county showed rainfall amounts that were “way above normal” for the 31 days in May.

A Brazos River Authority gauge on Lake Granbury measured 8.18 inches in May, and a co-op gauge five miles north of Granbury had 8.66 inches in the month.

In Somervell County, a gauge at Dinosaur Valley State Park caught 6.88 inches in May, while a spot southwest of Glen Rose had 6.43 inches.

Sanchez said that the official gauge at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport captured a total of 7.77 inches in May, which ranks 21st historically for that location. That spot just beat out last year’s total of 7.54 inches in May. The all-time mark for DFW was 16.96 inches in 2015.

Average May rainfall totals for Hood County in recent years usually falls between 4.5 and 5 inches, Sanchez noted. The average rainfall for May in Cleburne is 4.85 inches, and in Burleson it’s 4.5.

Sanchez said that rain chances in this area remain in the forecast at least through the weekend, and possibly into next week.
