Pirates look toward Stephenville for next scrimmage

Posted

Coach Chad Zschiesche knows his Granbury Pirates will have to step up their game when they host No. 18 Stephenville for a scrimmage Friday evening at Pirate Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets posted a 6-6 record last year and return the bulk of their offensive and defensive starters. Stephenville has one of the largest and best offensive lines in Class 4A D2 and has an explosive potential on offense if the Yellow Jackets can nail down who will start at quarterback.

The starting signal-caller in Granbury is without question as Austin Jinkerson has cemented himself into the position with a great offseason.

The Pirate will need to work hard to protect their senior quarterback as Granbury is young at the position.

“We need to clean up some stuff in the front with our blocking,” Zschiesche said. “I think we are better than what we played like against Everman.”

That’s not to say the Pirates performed poorly, but coaches had a chance to break down video from the scrimmage, and now it is time to clean up the little things.

“Every player on the team has something they can improve on,” Zschiesche said. “On defense, we need to improve our tackling, and on special teams, we dropped an uncovered extra point snap.”

What does Zschiesche expect to see from the Yellow Jackets?

“They are always well-coached, and they are a dangerous downhill team,” Zschiesche said. “They will throw it up over the top of you if you try and get greedy stopping the run. They are a lot like us on offense where they throw so many different looks at you.”

THE FORMAT

The scrimmage format will have the freshman starting at 5 p.m., and with both schools fielding two teams, the field will be split. The junior varsity is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

The varsity format should have three series each for second and first-team players, then two live-quarters of play will follow.

“This is going to be a good challenge for us, and it will make us better,” Zschiesche said.

BACK TO SCHOOL

The Pirates are an early morning practice football team that utilizes the afternoon for weight training and watching film. The freshmen teams will practice in the evenings.

“We adopted that format four years ago, and it has worked well for us,” Zschiesche said.

NO STADIUM RESTRICTIONS

According to Zschiesche, Pirate Stadium is 100-percent open, and there are no restrictions.

BENEVOLENCE FUND

Admission to Friday’s scrimmage will benefit the Our Day to Shine charitable campaign by the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation (THSCEF).

More than 1,165 Texas schools have participated in Our Day to Shine, which has raised more than $641,000 to aid athletes and coaches with special needs and other hardships.
