You can ooh and aah over a 1934 Ford Indy Racer Bohnalite Special and 149 other vintage cars on Sunday, Aug. 23 when the 2020 Hemmings Motor News Great Race rolls into town.

The annual event pits vintage cars in a cross-country endurance competition of time, speed and distance.

The Great Race originally had a June date, but was rescheduled for Aug. 22-30 due to COVID-19 precautions.

The event begins in San Antonio Aug. 22 and ends Aug. 30 in Greenville, South Carolina.

Granbury hosts a lunch stop for racers at Lake Granbury Conference Center from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. Spectators are welcome to view the cars for no charge.

The origin of the Great Race goes back to Granbury entrepreneur Tom McRae. He founded the Great Race in 1983 with partner Norman Miller.

The first race included 69 antique auto enthusiasts traveling from California to Indiana. The race ended in Indianapolis, Indiana during the Indy 500 Race Week.

McRae had various business interests. On the Granbury square, he and his wife, Sandi, were known for building the Granbury Live Theater after purchasing the property in 1998. They built a large home known as Up Top Ranch on the second floor of the property.

Though McRae died in 2005, his vision for the Great Race and his love for old cars lives on through the continuation of the event.
