Taste-ful tourism

The Visit Granbury Convention and Visitors Bureau is partnering with a tourist group to name “Granbury’s Signature Drink.”

The winning concoction will be used by Visit Gran-bury in its promotion of tourism.

Local businesses as well as individuals of legal drinking age are invited to enter the contest. Fifteen entries will be accepted.

The deadline to enter is 2 p.m. Wednesday. Entry forms and rules are available at www.visitgranbury.com.

The contest will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at the Best Western Hotel at 1517 N. Plaza Dr.

The panel of eight judges will include community leaders, representatives of Gran-bury’s hospitality industry and representatives of the Cigar Aficionado Trades and Sales (C.A.T.S.) organization.

The C.A.T.S. group selected Granbury as the location for its C.A.T.S. Fest 6, a three-day craft beer and cigar festival that will take place over Memorial Day weekend.

Beverages in the signature drink competition do not have to include alcohol.

Drinks will be judged on the creativity of their name and how well they reflect the “Granbury experience.” Entries must contain at least two ingredients.

CVB Director Tammy Dooley said that many cities boast their own signature drink.

For Granbury, she said, “we expect inspiration to come from Granbury’s blue lake, rich history, boating and water sports, and maybe even dark ghostly tales. Plus, with our established wineries, distilleries and brewery partners we expect to see very creative entries.”

Dooley said that choosing a signature drink for Granbury is “a great way” to unite the city’s restaurants and bars “in a friendly competition.”

“This is another way we can enhance direct visitor spending to our city,” she said. “This signature drink can be tied into our marketing efforts, the recipe included in specific visitor group welcome bags, and even offered to event planners and during welcome receptions.”

She added, “The competition for tourism is tough and we are competing with great cities. The more we do to enhance the visitor experience in Granbury helps ensure we leave a lasting impression.”

The winner of the contest will receive a trophy, a $100 cash prize and recognition as the creator of Granbury’s signature drink.

Dooley said that the winning drink will probably be promoted by Visit Granbury for about three years. After that, a new competition may be held.
