Try a little kindness

Posted

Try a little kindness ... it could go a long way.

That’s the message Oak Woods School is sending.

Others are recognizing Oak Woods’ simple but effective words to live by.

The campus was only one of 87 in the state that was recently honored as a Texas State School of Character.

Brandi Richeson’s fourth-grade class at Oak Woods learned what caring truly means.

Richeson saw an article in Southern Living magazine about World War II Army veteran and Oklahoma resident Recil Troxel who is battling stage 4 cancer.

“He is going on 93 years of age and is pretty much obsessed with getting mail,” Richeson said. “I decided what an awesome connection we can have incorporating what caring about someone means.”

CARDS, CARE PACKAGE

With the help of parents and co-workers, all of Richeson’s classes mailed birthday cards to the man along with some goodies for a care package.

“The kids called this ‘Operation 93’ because of it being his 93rd birthday,” Richeson said.

The news stations carried a story about the man, and Richeson’s students were able to see it on television and tell their parents “Hey, that’s our vet.”
