Wreaths Across America

Posted

A determined group of volunteers will place hundreds of memorial wreaths on the graves of veterans buried at Acton Cemetery on Dec. 15. It’s part of National Wreaths Across America Day, an event held annually to remember the sacrifices veterans have made in wars since the American Revolution.

Now in its third year at Acton Cemetery, the Wreaths Across America campaign was created by the Worcester Wreath Company when it began donating wreaths to VA national cemeteries in 2006.

Each December, wreath-laying ceremonies are held at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.

In 2017, 1,560,000 wreaths were laid at 1,433 participating cemeteries.

You can join the effort to fund the wreaths, to place the wreaths, or both.

WREATHS IN ACTON

Sponsored by the Elizabeth Crockett Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Wreaths Across America project at Acton Cemetery additionally serves as a fund-raiser in support of the Gran-bury High School JROTC. With every $15 wreath sponsored through the group, $5 back is donated to the JROTC. Donations are tax-deductible.

Wreaths Across America volunteers proudly work to ensure that we, as a nation, remember those who gave their lives while serving our country, honor those who have served or are currently serving, and teach our children the value of freedom.

The project was started at Acton Cemetery to honor local veterans and their families, and to afford an opportunity to participate in this patriotic and educational mission for those unable to travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

According to Kathy Hanlon, Wreaths Across America Location Coordinator for Acton Cemetery, there are over 450 veterans buried at Acton Cemetery with many family members of these veterans among those participating at the Wreaths Across America ceremony and wreath laying.

Hanlon adds, “It is important for the families of these and all fallen warriors to know their service was not in vain and will be remembered, appreciated and valued by the community. Even more crucial is that our children learn the value of military service so they continue the tradition of honoring our nation’s veterans.”

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

The public is invited to support this endeavor to raise awareness of the sacrifices of veterans by sponsoring remembrance wreaths and by helping to place wreaths on graves of veterans immediately following a brief ceremony starting at noon on Saturday, Dec. 15 at Acton Cemetery.

To sponsor a wreath, mail checks by Nov. 20 made payable to “Wreaths Across America” to Kathy Hanlon, Acton Cemetery Location Coordinator, 6316 Carrizo Drive, Granbury, TX 76049.

If wreaths are sponsored above those needed for graves of veterans at Acton Cemetery, excess wreaths will be placed at the over 100 veterans’ graves in Holly Hills Memorial Park.
