George E. Spears

George E Spears, 98, of Granbury, Texas died Saturday, October 12, 2019 after a brief illness.

Born August 9, 1921 in Fort Worth, Texas, he was the fifth of ten children born to Henry Phillip Spears and Irene Boone. George graduated from Mansfield High School at the age of 15 and went to work for the CCC. Enlisting in the US Army in 1942, he served as a 1st Sgt in the 5th Brigade, 37th Combat (Amphibious) Engineers. His unit landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and he was the recipient of the following medals: Bronze Star, Good Conduct, American Campaign Medal, European Campaign Medal with 4 campaign stars and one arrowhead, Army of Occupation Medal, and French Croix de Guerre with Palm. He was also awarded the French Legion of Honor medal in 2012.

After the war, George married LaFaye Walker and lived in Fort Worth where they raised their two children. He attended Texas Christian University at night and passed the CPA exam in the early 50's. He continued to work in that profession until his recent illness.

George was preceded in death by his wife, LaFaye, in 1991 and his second wife, Julianne Yonge Collier in 2007. He was also preceded by his parents and sevenj siblings. Survivors include his son, Joe B Spears (Lynda); daughter, Paula Sellman (Dale); five grandchildren, Michael Hewatt, Jr, Marcelee Whitley, Jody Augsburger (JoLynn), Tamara Henderson (Buddy), and Stacye Wilson, two step-grandchildren, Jared Sellman (Alena) and Sterling Sell-man (Stephanie); as well as, six great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. Also surviving are two sisters, Shirley Nowicki and Dorothy Campbell and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
