Fall fun and activities abundant in Pecan Plantation

Posted

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 14 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

Pecan resident and artist Heidi Easley facilitated a paint party with a fall theme for the youngest artists of our community.

Seven participants (two of whom were only five years old) put brushes on canvas and left with a fall-themed painting.

Heidi says the day brought “spooky fun” and Pecan definitely “has some artists among us!”

Assisting Heidi for the day was her daughter Pixie, and both ladies thank parents for allowing their “sweet kids to come and paint.”

GOOD SHOTS

Pecan’s annual Halloween pumpkin shoot is happening today, Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at our community’s archery/air gun range. Residents ages 8-13 will be participating, and spectators are welcome.

Halloween candy prizes await marksmen who hit their pumpkin targets.

SPOOKY SEASON

The PAC will be hosting a Halloween party and Trunk or Treat this afternoon, Saturday, Oct. 30 from 2-4 p.m. The event will include a haunted house, crafts, costume contest, games, and a balloon animal-making clown.

Trunk or treat will happen in the PAC parking lot where volunteers will be handing out candy. Members are welcome to bring both vehicles with candy-filled trunks or golf carts. Decorations and costumes for participants are encouraged.

Residents of all ages and stages are welcome to enjoy this fun and festive holiday gathering.

AUXILIARY MEETING

Lana Robinson writes that all Pecan residents are invited to attend the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service Auxiliary’s meeting on Monday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the PAC.

A number of important business items are on the agenda, including presenting a slate of officers to serve the auxiliary in 2022.

In addition, the two gentlemen vying for a spot on Pecan’s VFD/EMS board of directors, Kevin Dose and Mark Wilson, will be present to speak to the crowd and answer questions.

As Lana says, “join us for the meeting to learn how you can be involved in supporting your community volunteer firefighters and emergency response teams.”

VOTING TIME

Ballot boxes for the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service board of director election are located in the Pecan clubhouse lobby and the Charlie Lee EMS Building, and members may deliver their marked forms through Saturday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. Sending ballots through the mail to 9518 Monticello Drive is also an avenue for voting. Folks should remember to sign ballots and include member number on the outside envelope.

MARINA DAY

“Marina Fest” will be the call sign on Saturday, Nov. 6 from noon to 5 p.m. when Pecan’s marina will host activities, games, food, entertainment, and the opportunity to explore our community’s marina facilities. The marina committee and entertainment committee invite all neighbors and friends to join the event.

Furthermore, sponsors are needed for the day. Options exist for involvement, and interested folks may contact Ross Carnes for details: rhcarnes47@gmail.com.

DAY FOR VETERANS

Pecan’s annual time to salute veterans comes Wednesday, Nov. 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the clubhouse. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. Call 817-573-2641.

VACCINE AVAILABLE

Chief of Pecan’s Emergency Medical Service Sandra Winfield announces that flu shots are now available at the EMS compound weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $20 per injection.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

The Pecan Plantation Art Guild is a talented group of neighbors, one of whom has been recognized this month.

Barbara Doberenz’s work is currently featured on the PPAG’s “Artist on the Wall” display at the Pecan clubhouse. Barbara works in acrylics and watercolor and says she enjoys “allowing the paint to do its work before she does” by “letting it travel and mix into a final piece that reflects movement and rhythm.”

Barbara states that she bases her paintings on photos she has taken both in her community and in her travels and that she gravitates towards the challenge of realism and representational abstract art. Barbara’s pieces may also be viewed at the PPAG’s online gallery accessible at www.pecanplantationartguild.com.
