Pecan’s community gardens a busy place this fall

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 28 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 15 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

Folks in Pecan’s Community Gardens have been working heartily to prepare their space for fall planting and growing. In mid-October, a social hour was on the calendar where new members took a tour of the area. In addition, a marker thanking the founders of the Community Gardens arrived last month and was placed in the area’s front planter. Finally, a Kids’ Garden, planted and tended only by children, has come to fruition where little ones enjoy playing in the dirt as well as learn how to care for their plants.

ART SCENE

The Pecan Plantation Art Guild will gather for its next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the PAC. The day will hold a fused glass demonstration and workshop by Susan Thillen as well as a silent auction for art supplies and tools. An incentive for new members joining the PPAG now is that dues paid by Nov. 8 will cover the rest of 2022 and all of 2023.

ELECTION DAY

The PAC will be open for voting on Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Thank you to Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell for an outstanding program of speaking to and answering questions for Breakfast Club attendees last week.

The next meeting of Breakfast Club will feature Pecan’s annual Veterans Day breakfast and celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Reservations are required and now being accepted. Secure a spot for the day by calling the clubhouse front desk: 817-573-2641. The day will begin at 7:45 a.m. with registration in the lobby, followed by a program outside, and then move back inside for continued festivities and breakfast.

THANKSGIVING DAY

Pecan’s chef Jordan Ray announces that Pecan will host three seating times on Thanksgiving Day for members wishing to dine at the clubhouse: 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. Reservations are necessary and will go fast: 817-573-2641.

POOCH PLANTATION

Dennis Iacomini of Friends of Pooch Plantation (FOPP) writes that thanks to the revenue generated from annual membership dues to FOPP, the group has contracted with a local company to address the burr/sticker issue in Pooch Plantation. Two treatments of the area have already occurred with other applications coming in Dec. and Feb. that should reduce the presence of prickly items on our canines’ feet. FOPP appreciates its members who renew annual dues each March.

WITH GRATITUDE

As a part of a month-long slate of activities recognizing the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service, the PPVFD/EMS Auxiliary hosted an appreciation dinner at the Pecan clubhouse on Saturday, Oct. 22, honoring all volunteers and staff who serve the Pecan community. Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal as well as musical entertainment by JetBlacq, a professional duo consisting of Frank and Rebecca Faiola, also Pecan residents.

WOMAN’S CLUB

The next gathering of the Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club comes Thursday, Nov. 17, and reservations are due by noon on Friday, Nov. 11. Secure a spot by contacting Gerta Howell at ppwcres@gmail.com or 817-964-3139.

Past presidents of the PPWC recently enjoyed lunch and a time of reminiscing together with nine former presidents attending.

John Ingram, III, Pecan’s tennis professional, reminds residents that fall junior tennis is in full swing each Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. for the youngest players in Pecan. In addition, “Tennis 101” is on the schedule for folks desiring to learn or reunite with the game. Stop by the tennis shop or call 817-579-9412 to sign up.
