Betty Jean Franklin Smallin, age 85, was born in Blount County, Alabama to Berta and Clifford Carl Franklin. She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings. She is survived by her husband, John, daughter Pam and husband Jay, grandson Jonathan and several nieces and nephews.
After graduation from Susan Moore High School in Snead, Alabama, Class of 1952, Betty worked for General Telephone in Anniston, Alabama, prior to transferring to Southern California where she then met John.
After raising Pam, Betty volunteered regularly for Ronald McDonald House, and provided support at the Food Pantry in Chatsworth, California. She was active in the Women's Club of the Methodist Church. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi, a Philanthropic Sorority focusing on the needs of the less fortunate.
The majority of Betty's life was spent living in Southern California before moving to Reno, Nevada and then to Granbury, Texas for 15 years prior to moving to Gibsonville, North Carolina in 2018.
Betty loved spending time with family and friends. She was very competitive in several sports; softball, snow skiing, tennis and golf. Her competitive spirit carried forward to cards, mah jong, board games and especially Yahtzee
Betty will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, November 15,2019 in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. J. Barry Lemons. Entombment will follow in the Alamance Memorial Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 12noon Friday until 12:45, prior to the funeral service.
Flowers are acceptable or donations made in Betty's memory to your charity of choice.
