Blue shirts, brave hearts: PRCAC raises child abuse awareness with blue T-shirts

Posted

The Paluxy River Children’s Advocacy Center is going blue this April, with staff hoping that their movement will spread awareness about a cause near and dear to their hearts — child abuse.

Since 1983, April has been designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month, with blue representing the official color of prevention since 1989.

During the month of April — and specifically Friday, April 7, known as Texas’ official “Go Blue Day” — thousands of individuals across the nation will wear blue to show their support for children in need.

To join in their solidarity with the cause, staff members of PRCAC are selling 100% ring spun cotton T-shirts to kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month.

“We begin planning for Child Abuse Prevention Month in December,” said PRCAC Executive Director Margaret Cohenour. “Each year, the number of organizations and individuals participating has increased. We are excited to see so many different groups all coming together for one cause – to raise awareness about child abuse.”

The main purpose of the blue shirts is to raise awareness about child abuse around Hood County and the surrounding areas.

“This cause is important to us because we see the harm done to children on a daily basis,” Cohenour said. “The more awareness we can raise, the more education we can provide (that) we believe will make a difference in the lives of many children.”

The T-shirts are a royal blue color featuring pinwheels in various shades of blue on the front along with the phrase “Child Abuse Awareness." The back includes the hashtag #standupforchildren.

Each shirt costs $15 plus tax. Youth and adult sizes are available.

All orders must be placed online by 11:59 p.m. on March 1. No late orders will be accepted.

Shipping is also available for an additional charge.

If orders do not include shipping, customers will be notified before April 1 that their shirt is ready to be picked up at the PRCAC Granbury location — 1540 Southtown Drive, Suites 102/103.

Residents are encouraged to wear their blue shirts for “Go Blue Day” on April 7, and every Friday in April to spread awareness about child abuse.

PRCAC staff also encourages residents to post pictures of themselves and their friends wearing blue on social media using the hashtag #standupforchildren.

"We hope everyone wants to purchase T-shirts," said Traci Cooper-Ives, director of community education and engagement at PRCAC. "However, the main thing is to wear blue on Fridays."

The blue shirts campaign is just one of the many fundraisers, activities, and events that PRCAC puts on each year as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

“We will kick off the events with the Sasha Neulinger presentation for the public free of charge March 29,” Cohenour added. “We will put blue ribbons on the courthouse square and pinwheel gardens will begin popping up around town."
