Bridge Club seeks donations to benefit Alzheimer’s Association

The Granbury Bridge Club is seeking donations from the community to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

With over 350 participating bridge clubs within the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) last year, the Granbury Bridge Club was the smallest club ever to make the top eight in the nation through contributions — and it’s all thanks to Hood County’s generosity.

“The significant community support received last year totaled $22,800,” said Granbury Bridge Club Manager Carmond “Fitz” Fitzgerald.

As a result of the community’s large donation, Fitzgerald received recognition from the national Alzheimer’s Association on March 20, through the presentation of the Linda Powers Award “for leadership and achievement in significantly advancing the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association through participation in The Longest Day.”

The Longest Day is the day with the most light known as the summer solstice and typically takes place around June 20. During the months leading up to the Longest Day, people from across the world will fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s through fundraising activities. The Granbury Bridge Club will hold special duplicate bridge games during the week of June 20 to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Alzheimer’s is the fifth leading cause of death in those 65 and over. Today, an estimated 6.5. million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s.

Donations for the Alzheimer’s Association will be gratefully acknowledged in the Hood County News at the end of June through donation categories: Bronze ($50), Silver ($100), Gold ($250), and Platinum ($500 and up).

Individuals can send donations to: Granbury Bridge Club, 5918 Henslee Court, Granbury, TX 76049. Checks should be made out to the “Alzheimer’s Association.”

“One in three Americans will experience Alzheimer’s or a related dementia and there is no cure,” Fitzgerald added. “The Alzheimer’s Association is the primary research organization searching for a cure for this dreaded disease. Almost everyone knows someone who has suffered from Alzheimer's. Your donation could help find a cure and therefore benefit you in the future.”
