Courthouse to be surrounded by flags for much of year

Colorful flags will surround Granbury’s historic courthouse on the square for much of the year due to a unanimous vote by the Hood County Commissioners Court.

A schedule for the display of Texas flags, American flags, and blue CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) flags to be displayed during Child Abuse Prevention Month in April was approved by the county judge and commissioners at their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 9.

The court decided to extend the period when American flags will be displayed after County Judge Ron Massingill noted how nice it is to see flags around the courthouse, especially with the new lighting that is in place, and that he would like to see flags there year-round except at Christmastime when holiday decorations are in use.

Placement and removal of flags are handled by volunteers.

The court approved the following annual schedule:

• Feb. 16: Texas flags will be installed by The Sons of the Republic of Texas.
• April 1: The Texas flags will be removed and CASA will install CASA flags.
• April 30: CASA flags will be removed and replaced with American flags installed by Riley Stephens VFW Post #7835.

Instead of the American flags being removed on July 8, as was originally proposed, the Commissioners Court agreed to leave them in place until the Wednesday following Election Day in early November, just ahead of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
