Disabled veterans hold event to raise money for other vets

Posted

A group of disabled veterans is hoping to reach more veterans in need of assistance and raise funds to help those in need.

Five years ago, some disabled veterans of Granbury came together to create a community of compassion and charitable acts under the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) under chapter 238. Though they are a small group, they are making a big impact with the amount of service they are doing for veterans in and around the county.

Chapter members Don Caldwell, CDR., a disabled Army veteran, and Gary D. Keel, Adjutant, have loved being able to help those in need. They have helped veterans apply for disability compensation, supplied gas cards, added needed steps to a trailer, supplied money for a hot water heater for one veteran and so much more.

The group meets the second Monday of every month at the Church of the Good Shepherd. At the meetings, the group will go through its agenda and learn about situations where it can potentially provide services.

The goal of the chapter is to “get the disabled veterans the help they need in any type of need they might have,” Caldwell said. “There’s a lot of veterans in this county that don’t even know disabled veteran assistance exists. There’s also a lot of vets that don’t even know they qualify. We want to spread the word and let people know we’re here.”

The chapter has built a relationship with the American Legion in Granbury to raise money for members of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). They are looking forward to a “Turkey Shoot” event that will take place Jan. 27.

This event will allow for people to shoot at a target in hopes of winning a frozen turkey, ham, pork loin and more. The cost is $5 dollars per shot with shotguns and ammo provided. There will also be breakfast served from 8-10 a.m. with a $7 minimum donation. The breakfast will include two eggs, bacon or sausage, hashbrowns, a biscuit and gravy and fruit. The event will take place at the American Legion Post 491 located at 3409 Davis Rd. All proceeds will go to the DAV. For more information, contact Tim Quast 682-202.4063 or email shores1948@gmail.com.
