‘Drowning’ cited as preliminary cause of death for Keller man

An autopsy performed this week cites “drowning” as the preliminary cause of death in the case of a 21-year-old Keller man who had been swimming in Lake Granbury on the night of June 4.

Judi Pierce, public information officer for the Brazos River Authority, on Friday responded to an information request from the Hood County News about the death of Adin Derek Heikkinen of Keller. Pierce stated that “a preliminary cause of death has been determined to be drowning,” after Heikkinen’s body was transported to American Forensic Medical Group in Mesquite for an autopsy.

Pierce stated, “A final report is expected in the next few weeks,” but also noted that Lake Ranger Sgt. John Riley said “it could be several weeks to several months before a final autopsy is completed.”

According to the initial report issued by the BRA, Heikkinen had been swimming in Lake Granbury in the Laguna Tres subdivision of Granbury and “jumped off a dock and had not come back up.”

Heikkinen was not wearing a life jacket, Pierce noted.

Heikkinen was transported to Lake Granbury Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 p.m., according to the report. An emergency call reporting a 21-year-old man was unresponsive was received by Hood County dispatchers at 9:40 p.m.

Pierce noted, “It is our understanding that an inquest will be done” by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Earl “Dub” Gillum. When contacted by email earlier this week for additional information on the death, Gillum responded that he cannot “comment on any pending or impending proceedings in my court.”
