Fire destroys home of 78-year-old Hood County woman

The home of a 78-year-old resident of the Lake Granbury Harbor neighborhood north of Granbury was destroyed by a fire Monday morning, according to Hood County Fire Marshal Jeff Young.

The woman, Joanna Jean Barlow, suffered what was believed to be a minor burn on one of her feet, Young said. She received medical treatment at the scene and was released, he noted.

Young also noted that all four of Barlow’s pet dogs died as a result of the fire inside the three-bedroom home. None of the firefighters who battled the blaze — which was in the 5400 block of Lake Granbury Trail — were injured, Young said. The fire marshal stated that the cause of the fire is suspected to be an electric heater.

Young told the HCN that Barlow did not have insurance, and her nearby car sustained significant damage because of the heat of the flames.

American Red Cross officials were in touch with Barlow to assist her initially with a place to stay. A representative of the Lake Granbury Harbor Homeowners Association told the HCN that anyone wanting to provide either money, clothing or toiletries to help Barlow can bring their donations to the LGHHA office at 3631 Lake Granbury Dr. when it is open, between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays.

For more information, those wanting to donate anything to help Barlow can contact either that HOA office at 817-573-6171, or HOA President Katha Deel at 817-771-0825.
