Friends of Memorial Lane to honor firefighters on Saturday

Posted

The Friends of Memorial Lane will host an event on Saturday, May 6, to honor local firefighters and to commemorate International Firefighters Day.

International Firefighters Day is Thursday, May 3. It is a time to honor firefighters for their service and to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice through firefighting.

Saturday’s event will take place at 10 a.m. at Memorial Lane at the Jim Burks Firefighters Memorial Park, 561 N. Travis St.

Parking will be available at the city-owned building next to the park. Those who cannot walk the short distance or prefer a ride can ride the free shuttle that will be provided. The shuttle service will begin at 9 a.m.

The Friends of Memorial Lane board asks that everyone wear red and blue ribbons that day to represent fire and water. They also ask the community to pause at noon Saturday to say a prayer for firefighters and for those firefighters who lost their lives.

Firefighters of the Year from all nine of the county’s volunteer fire departments will be recognized and $50 Kroger gift cards, donated by The Friends of Memorial Lane board, will be given to each station.
