Golfers Gaylor, Nix qualify for state; many from area advance to regional track

Lipan’s Hanna Gaylor and Callan Nix of the Tolar Lady Rattlers qualified for the Class 2A Girls State Golf Tournament after posting second and fifth-place individual finishes April 17-18 at the Region 2 Tournament in Ferris. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams qualified for state.

Gaylor and Nix had the two lowest scores among players not on advancing teams. Gaylor had rounds of 77 and 87 for a second-place overall 164 total, while Nix posted rounds of 86 and 88 for a 174.

The state tournament is scheduled to be played May 15-16 on the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

As a team, the Lady Rattlers finished sixth. The Rattlers had two teams competing, with the A team placing eighth and the B team finishing 11th.

The Rattlers and Lady Rattlers won the District 11-2A golf championship.

GRANBURY TRACK

Five Pirates and two Lady Pirates will be competing in the Class 5A Region 1 Track Meet at Texas Tech University in Lubbock Friday and Saturday after qualifying from the Area 5/6 Meet in Justin this past Friday.

Kassidy Kirkpatrick leads the qualifiers after winning a gold medal in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, six inches, and taking second in the long jump at 18-6.25.

In addition for the Lady Pirates, Aubrey Ward is advancing in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished fifth with a time of 17.39 seconds, but was moved up after the fourth-place finisher scratched.

Miller Schenewark won the lone gold medal for the Pirate boys, clearing 6-4 in the high jump. He will be joined at regionals by Jadon Rogers, second in the 100, 11.16; Bryan Hailey, second in 3,200, 9:53.71; Hayden Burns, fourth in 110 hurdles, 15.25; and Ryan Brennish, fourth in pole vault, 11-0.

From regionals, the top two finishers in each event qualify for state, along with the top third-place finisher in each event from across all four regions. The state meet is set for May 11-13 at the University of Texas in Austin.

TOLAR TRACK

The Tolar Rattlers are back-to-back area track champions after winning the Class 2A Area 11/12 Meet in Rio Vista on April 19. Their score of 163 easily topped runner-up Hamilton with 87.

The Rattlers will be sending 13 qualifiers in a dozen events to the Region 2 Meet Friday and Saturday in Springtown. From there, the top two finishers in each event, along with a wild-card qualifier from across all four regions, will advance to state in Austin May 11-13.

The Lipan Lady Indians qualified five athletes for regionals and the Lady Rattlers advanced two.

GRANBURY GIRLS GOLF

Another successful golf season is in the books for the Granbury Lady Pirates as they finished eighth at the Class 5A Region 1 Golf Tournament at Texas Tech's Rawls Golf Course April 17-18.

The Lady Pirates posted a two-day score of 745.

"I am very proud of the girls even though we fell short of advancing to state," Lady Pirates coach Becky Addison said.

It is the sixth consecutive season since 2017 that the Lady Pirates have advanced to regional competition. There was no regional tournament in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also during that span, Mason Lewis won an individual state championship in 2021 and returned to state in 2022.

The Lady Pirates opened regionals with a team score of 374 and improved to 371 on the second day.

Granbury was led by junior Akyah Ditto, who shot a 167 over two days. She improved by five strokes on Day 2, from an 86 to an 81, and finished 15th individually.

Also, sophomore Halle Carr had a 180 (87-93) and placed 31st, freshman Ariel Jimenez shot 195 (98-97) and tied for 46th, sophomore Grace Jimenez posted a 205 (105-100) and finished 59th, and senior Haley Golen came in at 210 (103-107) for 60th place. There were 94 individual participants in the tournament. 

GRANBURY BASEBALL

The Pirates’ playoff hopes remained alive as the regular season entered its final week. In the very tight District 5-5A race, the Pirates are tied for sixth, but only a game out of third.

Granbury (11-15 overall, 4-6 in district) was playing at Justin Northwest (5-5 in district) at press time and hosts the Texans Friday at 7 p.m. Azle (5-5), with whom Granbury split two league games, plays Brewer (4-6) twice and Saginaw (5-7) has finished the season and is out of the running for the playoffs. Aledo (7-3) and Wichita Falls Rider (6-4) have already clinched playoff berths.

This past week the Pirates were 1-2. Leaders were:

At Weatherford, 9-3 loss: Thomas, 2-for-3, RBI; Crites, 1-for-3, walk; Current, 1-for-4; Martinez, 1-for-2, triple; Hunter Jones, 1-for-1, double; Byrd, 1-for-3; Bramlett, 1-for-1, RBI.

TOLAR BASEBALL

The Rattlers (12-6-2, 5-0 in 13-2A) defeated Poolville 4-0 at home on April 18.

Leaders: Hitting - Keaton Morrison, 2-for-4, double, three stolen bases; Brock Owens, 1-for-3, RBI, stolen base; Jesse Owen, 1-for-2, walk, RBI; Merritt Imel, 1-for-3, double, RBI; Jackson LeCluyse, 1-for-3, double; Drake Owens, 1-for-1, two walks. TOLAR SOFTBALL

The Lady Rattlers ended the regular season with a 13-6 home victory over DeLeon on April 18. The Lady Rattlers (18-1-1 overall), ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, finished 8-0 in District 11-2A and have won 14 straight.

Pitching - Tryon, seven innings, eight hits, six runs (three earned), eight strikeouts, two walks.

Tolar will be on the road for its bi-district playoff contest at Itasca, Thursday, April 27 set for a 5:30 p.m. start.

LIPAN SOFTBALL

The Lady Indians are headed to the playoffs following their 11-1 home victory over Ranger on April 18. Ella Sharp pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Hitting leaders: Neali Overton, 2-for-2, double, triple, walk, three stolen bases; Sarah Marcantonio, 2-for-3, double, walk, three RBI, four stolen bases; Savannah Green, 1-for-1, double.

Lipan stole 16 bases, including three by Sharp.

Lipan (8-6, 5-3, second in 11-2A) will face Hamilton in a best-of-three bidistrict series Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, in Glen Rose.

GRANBURY SOFTBALL

The Lady Pirates’ season came to an end with a pair of losses, 14-4 at Saginaw and 10-0 in a ho-hitter at Aledo. Granbury ended the season 10-15-2 overall and 4-8 in District 5-5A.
