Candy incident at Granbury Middle School under investigation

A press release was sent out by the City of Granbury regarding an incident that occurred Dec. 12 in the early afternoon at Granbury Middle School.

According to the release, eight GMS students ate candy initially believed to include a narcotic that was distributed by a student. Granbury Police and Texas EMS responded, and the students were taken to the hospital. All eight students are reported to be okay.

An initial test of the candy resulted in a negative result for THC also known as tetrahydrocannabinol. Additional testing will follow as this in an ongoing investigation. The release also stated police are working with school authorities to further investigate.

Granbury Middle School Principal Andy Smith sent out an email to parents following the incident.

“The safety and well-being of your child is our utmost priority and we wanted to ensure that you are aware of the incident… We are taking every step necessary to ensure the safety of our students and prevent any future occurrences. We understand the seriousness of this matter and are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for your children.”

Smith went on to tell parents about the importance of educating children about the potential dangers of unknown consumptions as well as reporting any suspicious behavior.

“Rest assured, we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for your child. We will continue to work closely with the authorities, review our existing protocols, and implement any necessary additional measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” the email read.

Smith closed his email by informing parents they are welcome to reach out to school administration with any questions or concerns regarding the matter.

The HCN reached out to Granbury Police Department Chief of Police Mitch Galvan, who said the agency does not have any additional details or information at this time.
