Granbury resident celebrates 105th birthday with salon 'family'

Posted

For the past few years, like clockwork, Granbury resident Louise Evans has gotten her hair done every Thursday at Brazos Beauty Bar. This past week was no different — except for the fact that Evans was celebrating her 105th birthday two days early.

Originally from Brunswick, Georgia, Evans moved to Oklahoma in 2005, then to Granbury several years later.

She has two daughters, (both are deceased), three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She worked at JCPenney for more than 30 years and has lived with her son-in-law in Abe’s Landing since her husband’s passing in 1966.

Her salon “family” celebrated her special day on April 21 with a small coconut cake, cupcakes, a bright purple birthday hat and gifts consisting of a soft blanket and pillow.

Evans kept everyone at the salon entertained with her witty personality and joking nature. She explained that she grew up with two sisters and two brothers, making her the middle of five siblings — holding up one of her fingers for emphasis. (use your imagination to figure out which finger she held up).

While having a photo taken, Evans continued to eat a piece of her coconut cake and exclaimed, “This is good cake,” followed by a chorus of laughter — proving that when you’re 105, you pretty much have the freedom to do whatever you want.

When asked what her secret is for living so long, Evans replied, “that’s what I always get asked.”

“My secret is, I have no idea,” said Evans, who is a member of First Baptist Church of Granbury. “I don’t know why I'm still here. The Lord knows, but I don’t know. I just live every day as if it’s gonna be my last.”

Evans said she didn’t even have a driver’s license until she was 100. She commented that she has “lived a clean life of never smoking or drinking,” which might have something to do with her longevity.

“I’ve met so many sweet people,” she added. “I just love everybody. I have never met anybody that I didn’t like. I’ve lived a good life.”
