Granbury School Board sets May bond election

Posted

The ballot for the Saturday, May 7 uniform election will include a $394 million bond question for the Granbury ISD.

The GISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously at its meeting Monday night to accept a resolution from the Long-Range Planning Committee calling for a bond election, and then agreed to put the question on the ballot in May.

Trustees also appointed the Stantec firm as the architect for the bond project.

According to projections, the proposal would require a 20-cent property tax rate increase, but the GISD’s property tax rate would remain among the lowest in the region.

The resolution, agreed upon by all 83 members of the Long-Range Planning Committee, includes construction of a new Granbury High School campus with career and technical education as well as athletic components. The school would be big enough to accommodate 3,500 students.

The plan involves conversion of the existing Granbury High School into one large junior high campus.

Granbury Middle School and Acton Middle School would be repurposed to give the school district two additional elementary campuses.

Baccus Elementary would become a second early learning academy for full-day pre-kindergarten. All current elementary schools would undergo renovation.

Also included are several program changes, including:

  • Investment in early childhood education through full-day pre-kindergarten for all students, smaller class sizes, and district-wide reading and literacy initiatives.
  • Parent choice among elementary campuses.
  • Free dual credit and dual enrollment classes for all high school students.
  • Expansion of career and technical education programs for aviation, construction science, and Granbury Marine Corps JROTC.
  • Facilitation of a community youth sports program.

The proposal also includes construction of a transportation hub on the eastern side of the district to relieve traffic congestion.

Outside of any bond monies, the district would designate existing fund balance for the maintenance of current facilities, buses and technology.

More information on the proposal can be found at www.granburyisd.org/lrpc.

The last day to register to vote in the May 7 election is Thursday, April 7.
