Kassidy Kirkpatrick ended her high school career by jumping to the top of Granbury High School’s track and field record books by earning a silver medal as the runner-up in the girls high jump on May 12 at the Class 5A State Track and Field Meet at the University of Texas in Austin.
Kirkpatrick, a senior, matched her career-best performance in clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Her performance is believed to be the best ever by a Granbury athlete at state.
The only jumper to go higher than Kirkpatrick in Friday’s event was Hannah Pfiffner of Frisco Wakeland, who won the state title with a clearance of 5-10.
"I would like to thank my coaches and family for helping me get this far. Coach (Desiree) Shahan believed I could be a high jumper freshman year and has not only formed me into the person I've always wanted to be, but has stood by my side through all the losses and wins," Kirkpatrick said. "State has been something I've looked forward to all four years of high school and finally competing at it has been a surreal dream. I can't wait to continue my athletic career for the next four years."
Kirkpatrick has committed to high jump for Tarleton State University.
"Kassidy did great today. She was a little nervous but she was ready to compete," said Shahan, Granbury boys and girls high jump coach. "She jumped very well from her first jump on.
"Her goal today was to have fun and enjoy her last high school meet, and I think she succeeded in that," Shahan continued with a smile. "It has been a privilege to get to coach her for the last four years and I am going to miss her so much."
Lady Pirates head track coach Amber Ward said of Kirkpatrick, "Kassidy did great! She stepped up to compete and never missed a height until 5-8. She was so close on her first attempt at 5-8. She really wanted to PR, but super proud of her for walking away from the state meet with a silver medal."
