For as long as I can remember, video games have been a major part of my life. Whether it's fast-paced action games, deep role-playing games, or intricate puzzle-platformers, I've always enjoyed diving into different worlds. My wife, Mickayla Mehaffey, on the other hand, doesn't play games as frequently, but when she does, she gravitates toward titles like “Genshin Impact.” So, when we decided to play “Split Fiction” together, I was excited to see how the experience would unfold — not just as a game, but as something we could share.
“Split Fiction” invites players into a universe where reality and fantasy intertwine seamlessly. In this innovative co-op title, you and your partner step into the roles of two protagonists, each with their own unique skills and perspectives as you navigate a narrative filled with puzzles, challenges, and surprising moments. Every level is crafted to demand collaboration, ensuring that no matter your background in gaming, the experience is enriched by shared strategy and dialogue.
Going into it, I wondered how the co-op mechanics would change the way we engaged with the game. Mickayla put it best when she said, "I think that while it might work as a single-player game, the experience has more meaning when you're playing with someone else — it feels more rewarding."
This turned out to be one of the highlights of our playthrough. There were moments where our individual play styles complemented each other perfectly — one of us seeing a solution the other might have missed.
"Our play styles are similar, yet different enough that each of us could see different parts of the puzzle," Mickayla explained. "I wouldn’t say it changed the narrative, but it definitely enhanced the overall story."
Every game has those moments that stand out, whether it's an intense puzzle sequence, a clever mechanic, or just a moment that makes you laugh. For us, it was a particular sequence where I was controlling a fish and pulling a floating stick that she was perched on. “We had a lot of trouble with that part, but it still ended up being fun,” Mickayla recalled.
While we enjoyed the gameplay, Mickayla admitted she was initially hesitant about “Split Fiction” because of issues she experienced with its predecessor.
"I worried it might have the same issues — I got frustrated when I felt I was doing it right, and then it didn't work as expected," Mikayla explained. Thankfully, those concerns didn’t hold her back from enjoying this installment, and we found ourselves fully invested in the story.
One of the biggest draws of “Split Fiction” is its character-driven narrative. While neither of us felt a deep connection to a particular character, Mickayla found herself intrigued by Zoe’s storyline. "I have a theory about her personality that I'm eager to see confirmed as the game progresses." This added another layer to our experience—speculating on where the story might lead and how our actions would shape it.
Interestingly, “Split Fiction” doesn’t rely heavily on branching choices.
According to Mickayla, "Not really — it was a pretty straightforward game without too many choices to really make a difference." While this could be a downside for players who love narrative-driven choice systems, it didn’t take away from our enjoyment of the adventure.
So, would we recommend “Split Fiction” as a co-op experience? Mickayla didn’t hesitate: "Absolutely — it's a 10 out of 10."
While we haven’t finished the game yet, we’re excited to continue our journey. Playing “Split Fiction” together has been more than just playing a game — it’s been an opportunity to share an experience, navigate challenges as a team, and enjoy the story from both of our perspectives. Whether you’re looking for a fun game to play with a partner or a friend, “Split Fiction” proves that sometimes, the best stories are the ones you share with someone else.
