The weather couldn’t have been better for the recent Pecan Valley Center’s Hope + Live + Walk for Suicide Awareness on Saturday morning, Oct. 8, at Shanley Park. Representatives from Pecan Valley Centers were on hand to remind folks of the variety of behavioral healthcare services the center provides to persons with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disability, and alcohol and chemical dependency. Service areas for PVC include residents in Erath, Hood, Johnson, Palo Pinto, Parker, and Somervell counties. Organizers wanted to get the word out about 988, the new National Suicide Prevention Crisis Lifeline. Pecan Valley Center is just a phone call away with the 24-hour mental health crisis hotline, 1-800-772-5987. At the event, Sheriff Roger Deeds spoke on how his department addresses sensitive mental health issues and how staff like Casey Wilken (also attending) are trained specifically for the Mental Health Division of the sheriff’s department. Before the walk kicked off, there was an invitation to share personal stories about the pain of losing a friend or loved one to suicide.
