Pirates held on for 28-27 win in 1999, halting streak of 13 straight losses to Cleburne

Looking Back is a column that highlights articles retrieved from local newspaper archives that were published in years past.

The Hood County News reported in its Oct. 6, 1999 edition that Granbury High School’s football Pirates halted their 13-year losing streak to Cleburne with a 28-27 upset win over the Yellow Jackets. The headline described the game as a “heart-stopper.” GHS won despite 122 yards in penalties and six turnovers. GHS senior defensive end Bill Hamrick was quoted as saying, “This is the first time that I’ve beat them. This is the greatest feeling I have ever had.”

October 1955

An Oct. 27 article in the Hood County News-Tablet reported that the Lipan High School girls basketball team opened its season with a 51-26 victory at Olden. The Lipan boys team lost to Olden, 54-42. In their previous games, the Indians and Lady Indians had both defeated Graford. The boys won 55-29, and the girls posted a 58-27 victory.

October 1956

In their third game of the 1956 football season, Granbury High School’s Pirates were 27-7 winners over Bridgeport. Jackie Davis provided two rushing touchdowns and teammate L.T. Suitt ran for another. Also, Darrell Porter — taking over for the injured Walt Rains at quarterback for GHS — threw a TD pass to Suitt.

October 1967

The Oct. 26, 1967 edition of the Hood County News-Tablet reported that the Granbury High School Pirates posted a 46-0 homecoming victory over Eastland “before a standing room only crowd.” The Pirates racked up 413 yards rushing, and zero yards passing.

October 1976

Granbury High School’s Pirates were 15-0 winners over Lake Worth in their district-opening football contest, published in the Hood County News on Oct. 3, 1976. The two touchdowns for GHS were on a 49-yard pass from quarterback Paul Hayworth to Mark Hayworth, and an 80-yard run by Jimmy Hiler. On defense for GHS, Tim Mullen and Hayworth each intercepted a Lake Worth pass.

October 1993

In the Oct. 27, 1993 edition of the Hood County News, Granbury High School’s Lady Pirates secured a berth in the volleyball playoffs for a third consecutive year, taking a road victory over Joshua. Among the standouts in the game for the Lady Pirates were Cynthia Sims, with seven kills, Angie Brookshire with six kills. GHS head coach Fran Dunson was quoted as saying, “Against Joshua we did a great job of passing. If we can eliminate our missed serves we could get to regionals again.”
