Pirates, Rattlers win; Lady Pirates hold own in elite tourney

Granbury

Drew Henderson’s 34-yard field goal with just over five minutes to play lifted the Granbury Pirates to their first 2-0 start to a season since 2017 as they defeated the visiting Lake Worth Bullfrogs 17-16 Friday night.

The winning score was set up when Jadon Rogers gained a first down on a fourth-and-1 run with seven minutes remaining. He finished with 122 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 37 yards.

Pirate quarterback Walt Hartman threw for 141 yards with touchdowns to Halston Main of 8 and 22 yards. Main finished with four catches for 44 yards. Chad Flatt also caught a 33-yard pass.

The GHS defense was led by Dakota Grim with 11 tackles, Kyle Krieth with nine and Braydon Olthoff with eight. The defense held the Bullfrogs to 190 total yards, including just 51 rushing.

“They are playing great football as an entire unit, doing their job every play and trusting their teammates to do their job,” Granbury head coach Chad Zschiesche said of the defense. “I’m proud of the special teams and offense for fighting through adversity all night. Extremely proud of our coaches and players for battling for four complete quarters to find a way to win.

“Last, thank you to the community and student body for filling the home side of Pirate Stadium. The atmosphere was electric and your Pirates fed off your energy.”

Next is a trip to play Waco High School (1-1) to open District 4-5A Division I play on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Lions ended a 17-game losing streak this past Friday, defeating Dallas White 45-27.

In sub-varsity action last week against Lake Worth, Granbury junior varsity won 24-14, Freshmen Gold won 18-14 and Freshmen Purple won 26-8.

Tolar

The Rattlers (2-0) won at Early 51-14 as Peyton Brown rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jackson LeCluyse threw three TDs. Wyatt Jones caught two of 69 and 34 yards, and Drake Owens also caught a 27-yard TD.

John McClure and Sam Stewart led on the offensive line.

Clayton Stembridge returned a punt 60 yards for a score, the second straight week the Rattlers scored a special teams TD. Jones was 7-for-7 kicking extra points.

The Tolar defense held Early to only six yards rushing on 18 carries and recorded a safety. Isaac Blessing led with 10 tackles (one for a loss), Brock Owens had eight and Keaton Morrison had seven with two fumble recoveries. Luke Willmon also recovered a fumble, while Matthew Behrens and Braylen Rice each had an interception. Two of Bryce Brown’s five tackles were for a loss.

“With the rain we had to adjust a few things during the week and I thought we responded really well to that,” said Tolar coach Jeremy Mullins. “It was good to see us improve some things from the previous week.”

The Rattlers are on the road for a third straight week at Flower Mound Coram Deo Academy Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Lions (2-0) are coming off a 62-7 victory against Greenhill.

Volleyball

Granbury

The Lady Pirates went 3-4 and held their own in the prestigious KSA Events Fall Classic tournament at Universal Studios in Orlando this past weekend. The tournament featured teams from across America.

“The experience has been amazing. We made a lot of great memories, showed growth as a team and know exactly what we need to do going into district,” said GHS head coach Desiree Shahan.

Granbury (12-17) defeated New York Broadalbin-Perth 2-0, Nevada Reno Coral 2-0, Florida Pembroke Pines Somerset 2-0 and lost to Tulsa Union 2-0, West Virginia Parkersburg 2-1, Houston Sterling 2-1 and Florida South Plantation 2-0.

Christen Nichols was named the team Most Valuable Player of the tournament for Granbury. Kylie Moody was also noted for her standout play.

Granbury opens District 5-5A play at home against Brewer Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m.

Team tennis

Granbury improved to 2-0 in District 5-5A (5-2 overall) with a 12-7 victory over Azle as Alyssa Krause won in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker. Also, Connor Townsend posted key wins in singles and doubles.

The Pirates are slated to host Wichita Falls Rider in a district match on Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m.

Cross country

Granbury

The Pirates and Lady Pirates were in the Burleson Elk Run this past Friday.

Bryan Hailey led the varsity boys with a third-place individual finish, posting a time of 16 minutes and eight seconds over the 5K course. The varsity girls were led by Emery Kirby, who was 31st overall, in 21:46.

Alexie Patrick was sixth among junior varsity girls with a time of 23:10, while Kolden Rand paced the JV boys, finishing 22nd in 19:49.

GHS is scheduled to compete in the Fort Worth Paschal meet on Sept. 17.

Tolar

The Rattlers and Lady Rattlers cross country teams competed in the Keene Invitational on Aug. 31.

The girls were led by Braelynn Westbrook, who finished 28th with a time of 13:14 over 2 miles. Cage Wolf led the boys, placing 101st with a 21:39 over 5K.

“All of the runners improved their times and most had a personal best,” Tolar coach Ericka Halfmann said. “The kids are buying in and really working hard.”

Tolar is slated to compete in the Lipan Invitational on Sept. 14.
