The Hood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 21-year-old local resident who has been identified as Chance Allen Meazell, according to Lt. Josh Lane. Deputies responded to the 9000 block of Contrary Creek Road shortly before 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12 after receiving a report of a deceased person, Lane said in a news release.

The release also states:

“Upon arriving on scene, deputies located a deceased male, at the entrance to a gas well site, who appeared to have been there for an unknown extended period of time. The person who located the male is cooperating with the investigation.

“Upon completing the on-scene investigation, the body was sent to American Forensics in Mesquite, Texas for an autopsy where fingerprints were obtained and later used to identify the male as Chance Allen Meazell (21 years old).”

In response to whether the case is considered a criminal investigation, Lane stated, “All cases, such as this, are considered criminal investigations until determined otherwise, however the circumstances surrounding the cause of death and how Chance came to be where he was located are unknown at this time and still under investigation.”

Lane added, “If anyone has information regarding Chance in the days prior to him being located, please contact Hood County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Patrick Jones at 817-579-3316 or Hood County Crime Stoppers at 817-573-8477.”

The news release notes that Meazell’s family “was notified after he was identified,” but it does not give a specific date when that was done. He stated that no further information is currently available.

Meazell’s mother, Nicole Elliott, had posted about his death on social media over the weekend. She wrote that donations are welcome, to cover the cost of her son’s cremation and headstone.

Christy Bartow, one of the pastors at Acton United Methodist Church where Elliott is employed as a staff member, said that their church partners are collecting donations to help the family. She noted that for members of the general public, a Go Fund Me page has been set up for them as well, for anyone who wishes to donate.
