Sports Roundup: Lady Pirate golfers rally to reach regionals

Posted

The Granbury Lady Pirates Purple team overcame a 14-stroke deficit after the first day of the District 5-5A Girls Golf Tournament at Sugar Tree Golf Course near Lipan on Tuesday, March 28, to qualify for the Region 1 Tournament.

The Lady Pirates had a two-day team score of 780 (398-382) to finish as the runner-up in the team standings. Aledo High School’s Black Team won the district title with a 675. Both teams will compete on the Rawls Course at Texas Tech University in Lubbock April 17-18, where the top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams will qualify for state tournament. The state tourney is scheduled for May 15-16 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

Akyah Ditto led Granbury with back-to-back rounds of 90 for a 180 total. Hailey Golen was next with rounds of 96-97 for a 193 overall score. Rounding out the GHS scores were Halle Carr, 195 (105-90), Ariel Jimenez, 212 (107-105) and Grace Jimenez, 219 (107-112).

The four lowest scores in each round comprise the team score.

After the opening day the Lady Pirates Purple were in fourth place, 14 shots behind second place Aledo Orange and 11 behind third place Justin Northwest. However, Granbury improved by 16 shots on Day 2 to stage the rally.

"We were devastated because we played poorly, but we talked about everyone digging in and making up five to six shots on Tuesday and see where it got us," coach Becky Addison said. "Let me just say these young ladies showed true grit by beating Aledo Orange by 25 shots and Northwest by 42 shots to capture the runner-up spot for regionals. I am so proud of these young ladies for their amazing comeback.

"We were the only team that showed improvement on Day 2."

Granbury Gold shot a 902 over the two days (447-455). That unit was led by Reagan Neal, 220 (113-107), Lilley Prewitt, 224 (109-115) and Ryli Lewis, 227 (113-114).

GRANBURY GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Pirates' soccer season ended in the area (second) round of the Class 5A playoffs with a 3-0 loss to Midlothian, the No. 4-ranked team in the state. Granbury finished 10-11 overall record. The Lady Pirates had opened the playoffs with a 2-1 overtime victory against District 6-5A champion Arlington Heights.

The Lady Pirates finished fourth in District 5-5A.

“We were pretty young. I'll be missing five starting seniors. They were key players and we'll miss them. Mostly defensive players,” coach David Winkleman said. “We have next year’s seniors and juniors that will be real leaders. Next year's senior standouts, like returning captain Riley Morris, will lead a young back line. Dom (Callahan) and Emery (Kirby), who provided most of the scoring, will be awesome up top.

“Next year's junior standouts Tessa (Rohleder), Elise (Mikulsckis), and Gracie (Pae) should create lots of chances out of the mid and up top. We also had a lot of freshmen standout most notably C.J. (Brumfield) as a defender and a striker and Jillian (Williams) as an AM (attacking midfielder) and striker.

“Future looks bright and I'm excited about next year!”
